There is a classic Simpsons episode in which Sideshow Bob tries to unseat Mayor Quimby. As part of his campaign, Sideshow Bob runs one of the greatest political ads of all time:

Thankfully the “Veepstakes” will be over soon, as both candidates can be expected to make their Vice Presidential announcements in the next few days. (In fact, Obama is widely expected to make his announcement this afternoon.) But I thought I would take a minute to address some of the more absurd things I’ve heard pundits say about this.

Last weekend, for the first time since becoming their parties respective nominees, McCain and Obama were on the same stage answering the same questions. They weren’t there at the same time–which is why it was a “forum” and not a “debate”–but nonetheless the forum felt a lot like a presidential debate. In case you missed it, and if you don’t watch CNN regularly you might have, what happened is that Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church (one of the largest and most prominent churches in the nation) used his personal relationship with both candidates to get them to participate in the forum. He had McCain sit in the back in a (supposedly) sound-proof room while he gave a one-hour interview with Senator Obama. Then he called McCain out, sent Obama on his way, and asked (mostly) the same questions of Senator McCain.

It’s an awful word, but I couldn’t resist using it. In any case, if you have any interest at all in the upcoming presidential election, you should read this article on what Obama’s economic priorities are. Obama has been characterized as both a conservative and a socialist, and the article attempts to explain the truth behind both of those statements. The article is very long, and obviously written from a friendly perspective, yet it also contains some pretty keen insights and observations about how the man who would be president views taxes, the budget, business and environmental regulation, and many other things.

There’s been quite a lot of controversy lately over the age of the Chinese women’s gymnastics team. In particular, most of the controversy has revolved around He Kexin, who was reported last year by the Chinese state-run media as being only 13, and yet who now claims to be 16. She has a state-issued passport indicating her birth date as Jan 1, 1992–which would make her 16. And yet no one really believes that passport is legitimate.
