An interesting Op-Ed on why the current health care reform proposal is a bad idea. Its remarkably short on details and evidence, and long on polemic, but at the same time it does manage to reflect a number of my concerns with the reform. I know that there is a sense of urgency, but ultimately a well considered plan will yield much more fruit long term than a rushed and flawed one.

An atheist group is suing to keep the words “in G-d we trust” off the new capital building visitors center. They claim that it alienates atheists, and is offensive and discriminatory against non-believers. As an atheist, I don’t necessarily agree with that.

However, being swept under the rug is the fact that it would cost $100,000 to do the engraving. Ignoring for the moment the fact that $100,000 is way overpriced for such a simple engraving (it should cost a tenth of that), why would we pay to do the engraving at all given the record deficits we’re dealing with?

I know, $100,000 is a drop in the bucket compared the cost of a health care bill. But still, that’s more than the combined salary of two median American households. Its not trivial. What I want to know is why are politicians wasting taxpayer money on this? Especially the republicans, who are criticizing Obama for reckless spending.

Simple solution the contraversy – don’t do the engraving. Save the money. And start looking for other stupid expenditures to cut too. If you can find 100 of them, that’s 10 million dollars, and that’s enough to vaccinate every newborn this year from polio…

This is why special interest groups get such a bad reputation. It’s rather sickening.

“In Ricci, Judge Sotomayor’s empathy for one group of firefighters turned out to be prejudice against another.” — Senator Jeff Sessions, R-AL, Ranking GOP Senator on the Judicial Committee

Let’s look at that statement closely.

Why are abortion protesters disrupting the hearings and protesting outside? Sotomayor has basically no abortion record, so far as I can find. Her only ruling on the topic that I’m aware of involved reducing abortion rights. The anti-abortion crowd has no cause for protesting this pick; why are they making a fuss about her?
